Artist Statement

My approach and vision to photography is simple, even though from time to time I try to complicate it or make it sound more sophisticated.

APPROACH/VISION/INTENTION; A good picture.

Every day all I want to do is come home with a good picture.  Could be anything from a dirty wall, a tourist hiding under an umbrella, the coast of Australia or a stack of licorice All Sorts.

I am grateful for every good image that comes my way. Sometimes they are serendipitous gifts. Sometimes (but less often) they are because I've preplanned my tactics.  If its good I keep it. Portraits, travel photography, black and white, colour, buildings, landscape, still life, macro, quirky, earnest, India, Australia, deep saturation, washed out. I love it all.

How to summarize all that in an 'artist statement'? I don't. In the best of my pictures I see new stuff even years after I took it. Photography is a mysterious art. That's why we pursue it; to be surprised by joy at what the light and frame reveal.

Not to conceptualize and pre-cook it.

What you see or don't see in my photographs is for you to work out.  What an individual picture or series 'says' to you is probably what you want or need to hear.  The only thing I know and will claim about my photos is they are glimpses of the unrelenting, resilient and omnipresent beauty of the world.
